Makerbot founder Bre Pettis and collaborator Kio Stark gave themselves exactly 20 minutes to create a manifesto encapsulating everything they knew about bring a creative vision to life. They called it The Done Manifesto.
Here’s the list:
- There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
- Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
- There is no editing stage.
- Pretending you know what you’re doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you’re doing even if you don’t and do it.
- Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.
- The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.
- Once you’re done you can throw it away.
- Laugh at perfection. It’s boring and keeps you from being done.
- People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.
- Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.
- Destruction is a variant of done.
- If you have an idea and publish it on the internet, that counts as a ghost of done.
- Done is the engine of more.
Yep, this is definitely worth saving for later.

I want to meet this illustrator.
Bre Pettis and Kio Stark,
We dig it . . . we agree….thanks for the post BCL (~_~)
The Done Manifesto: http://t.co/mm3TN901 – really like this! (cc @Adbuzz coz I think you’ll like it too!)
This is very awesome. One note that I’ve made through time though, is that if I force myself to work on something that was incomplete from a long time ago, sometimes it turns out way better.
Although at the time I did allow myself to move on and complete other “finished” songs (talking music here), sometimes your brain will bring something new to something old and make it love-able.
so I guess # “6. The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.” is very true for me.
But # “7.Once you’re done you can throw it away.” is half of it.
I like throwing it aside, and bringing something else to it later haha.
Although, I guess that’s not entirely the purpose of this particular manifesto haha
Good point Kevin. Space from your work is important. On that note, you should do something with ‘Shadow Puppets”.
This is wonderful I’m going to print it out now: http://t.co/3gHzbFZh (sorry I can’t find who pointed me at it – but thanks!)
Awesome! The Done Manifesto; my favourite : “8. Laugh at perfection. It’s boring and keeps you from being done.” http://t.co/U36qvAjS
