PATHS (Practicing Art through Hide & Seek): A Project Series by Andrew Lochhead – Sign up and Participate!

PATHS is part of an ongoing series of works and actions that explore notions of “play” as: an act of transgression, resistance, detournément, and subversion, a method of pedagogy, a means of investigating and exploring the urban environment & a means toward social engagement, in relation to the fine arts, – all within the context of our contemporary zeitgeist. Led by artist Andrew Lochhead, PATHS will consist of 3 games held at 3 locations in Windsor on September 20th, 21st, and 22nd.

Downtown (Friday, September 20th – 8:30pm-midnight) – Meet at Civic Space (411 Pelissier Street)

Devonshire Mall (Saturday, September 21st – 3-7pm) – Meet at doors by Tim Hortons (3100 Howard Avenue)

Jackson Park (Sunday, September 22nd – 3-7pm) – Meet at main gates of Jackson Park (Ouellette Avenue & Tecumseh Road)

Also, join us for a wrap party at 7pm at Villains Beastro on Sunday, September 22nd.

The game represents a fun way of engaging with an aspect of our city of which many of us are unfamiliar. We hope you can make it out.

Neighbourhood Spaces Interview with STAG Executive Director John Elliott

Next in the Neighbourhood Spaces (NS) mini-doc series is an interview with John Elliott, Executive Director of Sandwich Teen Action Group (STAG) in Windsor, ON. In this video, John talks about his organization, the importance of face-to-face communication, and community partnerships. STAG is a community-based charitable organization in the west end of Windsor, providing programs and support for at-risk youth. A former school, STAG offers an ideal location for the Centre, which will function as a music classroom, drop-in space and practice area for Neighbourhood Spaces (NS) artist-in-residence Kenneth MacLeod (Windsor).

Throughout his 6 week residency, Kenneth will oversee the project and offer free music instruction and workshops to neighbourhood youth ages 13-20. After the residency, Kenneth aims to continue the centre, creating a permanent space for youth to develop and expand their musical skills and abilities in Windsor.

He will also be at the Windsor Youth Centre (WYC), a drop-in Centre for homeless and at-risk youth ages 13-20 located in Wyandotte Town Centre. Every Wednesday he can be found jamming, teaching and learning with youth at the Centre.

Friday, August 9th from 7 – 9PM, as part of Windsor’s Downtown Culture Crawl @ Civic Space (411 Pelissier Street, Windsor, Ontario)

You are invited to meet five of the ten artists selected for Neighbourhood Spaces (NS), Windsor & Region’s new socially-engaged artist residency program. Supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), NS is a partnership between Broken City Lab (BCL), Arts Council Windsor & Region (ACWR) and the City of Windsor. Stop in Broken City Lab’s CIVIC SPACE, enjoy a bite to eat and learn about the artists, their residency projects and the NS Program.

Watershed+ Residency (Phase 1)

August 7th – 15th, 2013 at Ralph Klein Park and the Surrounding Area, Calgary, Alberta

Watershed+, hosted by the Utilities and Environment Protections department of the City of Calgary, is a unique art program which embeds artists and their individual processes within the Calgary watershed. We will be heading to Ralph Klein Park for Phase 1 of the project this Wednesday, August 7th, to visit the studio and surrounding wetlands, and to start thinking through our project happening next summer. We’ll be staying until August 15th, during which time we’ll be asking many questions, exploring the social and physical boundaries of the region, and using this information to inform our future project at Ralph Klein Park. Stay tuned for more info!

Unfortunately, CIVIC SPACE WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL AUGUST 19th, but please register and stop by for the ACWR workshop, Modes of Documentary, happening here tomorrow, August 6th at 4pm and the Interactive Media & Video Installation workshops happening August 13th and 20th.

The Peripatetic Library: Drouillard Versions, a Project & Residency by Dan McCafferty

In Residence until August 8th at Civic Space – 411 Pelissier Street, Windsor, Ontario

Daniel McCafferty, a local artist, educator, and member of Public Design Unit is currently in residence at Civic Space developing a mobile library / studio site in the Drouillard neighbourhood of Windsor, Ontario.

The project will be used as an opportunity to establish a space to gather many types of information from the neighbourhood, whereby residents of the community can contribute material to the library. Materials produced will also be made available to community members for their own personal use.

Acting as your convivial librarian, McCafferty will represent the collected materials, and establish a method for distributing, disseminating, archiving and providing access.

The hope is to contribute an image of the dynamics of the Drouillard neighbourhood. Stop by Civic Space  for opportunities to contribute to the project and engage with Dan over the next week.

The Arts Council Windsor & Region Presents “Modes of Documentary”, a two-day professional development workshop geared to providing artists tools, tips and resources for visual storytelling, documentary theory and production methods. The workshop will consist of presentations on the following: short documentary film screenings, doc talk, telling a story visually, modes/genre of documentary and production methods and marketing and promotion methods of the finished product.

ACWR Members – Two Days: $10 – One Day: $5*

Non-ACWR Members – Two Days: $15 – One Day: $10*

The Arts Council Windsor & Region presents Interactive Media & Video Installation, a two-day professional development workshop geared to providing artists tools, tips and resources for broadening their experience with digital media and presentation skills. The workshop will consist of presentations on the following: application foundations including MAX MSP and Jitter,corrupting digital data, establishing your vision, hands on creating of a digital projection and a presentation of works created in the workshop and marketing and promoting your finished product.

Neighbourhood Spaces Artists-in-Residence Announced, Lisa Lipton Starts this Week!

The 2013 – 2014 Neighbourhood Spaces (NS) artists-in-residence have been announced! Residencies kick-off this week with Lisa Lipton (Halifax, NS) at Atkinson and Forest Glade Skate Parks in Windsor, ON with her project: BLAST BEATS: Phase Three.
 
BLAST BEATS: Phase Three is an exploration in alternative methodologies for building a feature film on the road that spans the scope of Lisa’s experiences as a visual artist, musician and director. Each scene is being constructed in different locations across North America and explores the potential within transforming multi- media installations and performance into film sets and scenes. The narrative evolves with each place and space, and is informed its local community members and conversations with participating collaborators. Through mixing landscapes, people, artistic practices and genres of music, the project aims to unite a vast linage of creative energy in order to create a diverse story and feature film that transcends time and space. For her 6-week NS residency, Lisa will facilitate the making of a“Windsor-based SCENE” at the Skate Parks of Windsor to be included in the larger docufictional film.

Broken City Lab Publications Featured in “On the Road: Detroit”

The Art Book Review, a Los Angeles-based compendium of reviews about books relating to the subject of art, is including a selection of Broken City Lab publications as part of “On the Road: Detroit“, a collaboration with Creative Rights, a legal service for creative folks based in Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan.

They are including three mini publications: Shortcuts and other Practices: 10 Days in a Western City, Hamilton: Two Tales of a City, and Invented Emergency (for Small Cities & Big Towns). Also included is the hardcover publication How to Forget the Border Completely, which investigated the numerous ways one could approach the Windsor-Detroit border as a concept, an object, and an obstacle.

Slow Down the City: A Series of Alternative Transportation Events throughout the Month of July

We’re pleased to announce a month-long series of workshops here at CIVIC SPACE that will explore the pace of our automotive city and how we might slow it down with our actions and transportation choices. We’ll be teaming with with local bike co-op City Cyclery and local longboarder Troy Linton to host four events throughout the month of July that will use skill sharing and group rides to open a dialog about the pace of Windsor.

All Slow Down the City events are free and open to everyone. Bring your bike, board, or come without. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Neighbourhood Spaces Artist-in-Residence Announces Call to Community for New Music Resource Centre at Sandwich Teen Action Group (STAG)

Tuesdays from 4-7pm, Starting June 25th – July 16th @ STAG – 3735 King St. just off of Prince Road

Local Musician, Singer-Songwriter, Bandleader and Teacher, Kenneth MacLeod is one of 10 artists selected for Neighbourhood Spaces: Windsor & Region Artist in Residence Program, a new initiative of “The Collaborative”: Arts Council Windsor & Region (ACWR), Broken City Lab (BCL) and The City of Windsor. After receiving 150 applications, Neighbourhood Spaces (NS) has selected 10 Canadian artists to be located in community sites throughout Windsor and Essex County for 4-6-week artist residences.

As a NS artist-in-residence, Kenneth will be developing and creating a new drop-in music resource and education centre at Sandwich Teen Action Group (STAG), a community-based charitable organization in the west end of Windsor, providing programs and support for at-risk youth. A former school, STAG offers an ideal location for the Centre, which will function as a music classroom, drop-in space and practice area. Kenneth will also be partnering with the Windsor Youth Centre (WYC), a drop-in Centre for homeless and at-risk youth ages 13-20 located in Wyandotte Town Centre. As an NS artist-in-residence at WYC, he will be there Wednesday evenings encouraging youth to write and share songs about their own experiences, communities and neighbourhoods. At the end of the residency, youth will have the option to participate in a performance that will celebrate and showcase their talent.

Throughout his 6 week residency, Kenneth will oversee the project and offer free music instruction and workshops to neighbourhood youth ages 13-20. Drawing on connections to local musicians and community members, Kenneth and the NS Program will bring volunteers, equipment and resources to the Centre.  After the residency, Kenneth aims to continue the Centre, creating a permanent space for youth to develop and expand their musical skills and abilities in Windsor.

In preparation for his NS residency, which begins on August 6th, Kenneth is asking for donations of new or used instruments of all kinds such as drums, tambourines, keyboards, guitars and ukuleles, as well as other sound equipment and music resources such as music books, sheet music, amplifiers, audio cables, microphones, guitar racks and other items.

Supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Neighbourhood Spaces will allow artists to pursue research and create artwork that explores and responds to the stories, triumphs and challenges of various communities. Residencies will begin July 15th, 2013 and be staggered over the next year, concluding in August 2014. A final exhibition and symposium will be held in the fall of 2014 and an online publication will be created documenting the program. The 2013-2014 NS Artists will be announced in July 2013.
