“Art Shanty Projects is an artist driven temporary community exploring the ways in which the relatively unregulated public space of the frozen lake can be used as a new and challenging artistic environment to expand notions of what art can be.”
As you can see, they have experimented with ice lettering in a more permanent fashion. These are more like ice gravestones, aside from the text. I think ours could be more thoughtful, but it’s nice to see examples of something we’d like to accomplish.
It’s also an interesting idea to create an artistic community for a set period of time in a temporary natural setting.
Does Lake Erie or Lake St.Clair freeze over anymore?
Here’s where we’re at with the ice-text project:
Lake St. Clair still freezes thick enough to walk on, from what I’ve recently heard. Lake St. Clair was in our backyard for a number of years and we used the lake for snowmobiling during the winter. It used to freeze so well that parking lots were made for ice parties. As for the ice block, it looks good. The words are legible and the block is square. This is what we wanted out of it, right?
I’m fairly happy with the ice block, though there’s certainly a lot of other things that we could do… this is just the only thing I’ve been able to try (and had patience for)… If you guys still want to try to do more painting, we had some success with acrylic when Danielle was first testing.
