We got up early and headed down to the EC Row pedestrian overpass between the Dominion and Huron Church exits to install YOU ARE AMAZING! It’s hard to describe what it felt like to do this—taking on this project gave us all a genuine excitement about participating in changing a part of Windsor and the way we interact with it, even if it’s just for a moment. Windsor needs a lot of things, but I think maybe most importantly, it needs a little encouragement.

There was a lot of great documentation, with many photos after the jump, and a video on the way.

Redesigning Fences

Thinking about the many ways to work with fences, given that we seem to continually insist of putting them up, I found a couple examples lately of artists and designers working to interweave new patterns into chain link fence.

A Windsor strategy not fully exploited. Inserting vertical (or horizontal for that matter) strips of plastic of material into a fence could allow other patterns to emerge.

Save A City

Save A City, Text on Ice by Broken City Lab, February 3, 2009

At Windsor’s riverfront, SAVE A CITY, installed this afternoon. We opted out of using monofilament to hang the blocks of ice because there was a nice snowbank already there, and probably the last thing the Detroit River needs is more garbage in it. I’ll post some photos of the process of making these soon (definitely before the weather gets too warm).

The Pink Fence

The Pink Fence in Detroit

PowerHouse over in Detroit has started a blog! This is great, as I had previously wondered about the timeline of their activities, being able to read a blog really helps to contextualize their progress. Rather than trying to recount the story behind this pink fence in my own words, I’ll give you a brief quote from their blog:

“Anyway one day I mixed up some pink paint and employed two neighborhood theives to help me paint the fence.  The house that the fence belongs to had gone vacant in another foreclosure and was slowly being taken apart.  My two painters were not  unlike many in the neighborhood that were taking advantage of the foreclosures, in fact they had taken advantage of this very house on occasion.  So I set them  up with brushes and rollers and paint and we went at it.” (pinkfence)

EC Row Walkway Measurement

We spent part of Monday afternoon doing a site visit for an upcoming project we’ve been planning for a while. The EC Row Walkway crosses over the 6 lanes of EC Row and is a pretty incredible view. We took some measurements and did a quick visibility test. We were only up there for about fifteen minutes, but there were a lot of people honking, which makes me suspect this walkway is pretty underutilized. Photos after the jump.

Flagging Tape

300′ of bright orange flagging tape, $5.97 + tax. It’s fairly thin, but should be really easy to work with. We might have to double it up to make it visible on the fence, that is, double the width of each letter. We should test at Lebel later this week, or maybe on Monday before we go out for a site visit and measurements.

I saw this work by Andy Uprock, while trying to search out some more info on EINE. While I really detest this “cuprocking” terminology under which Uprock has framed this style of street art, I thought it would be a good example to note for our fence-text project.
